911±¬ÁÏÍø grad lands Musical Theatre role at one of London’s biggest theatres

911±¬ÁÏÍø graduateÌýGabrielle BrooksÌýis toÌýstar in a new production ofÌýOnce onÌýThisÌýIslandÌýatÌýRegent’s Park Open Air Theatre.ÌýÌýGabrielle (Acting,Ìý2011)Ìýhas been cast as central characterÌýTiÌýMoune in the musical that opens in May.ÌýÌý

We caught up withÌýGabrielleÌýto discuss the new role,ÌýherÌýcriticallyÌýacclaimedÌýportrayalÌýof Rita MarleyÌýinÌýGet Up, Stand Up! The Bob Marley MusicalÌýand her workÌýas co-founder ofÌýMawa Theatre,ÌýtheÌýUK’s firstÌýall Black, all female Shakespeare CompanyÌýrepresentingÌýWomen of the African diaspora.Ìý

How did you feel when you found outÌýyou’dÌýgot the roleÌýofÌýTiÌýMoune inÌýOnce onÌýThisÌýIsland?ÌýÌý

At the time IÌýwasn’tÌýable toÌýprocess. I was in a whirlwind of auditions andÌýself-tapesÌýand so caught up in deadlines that IÌýdidn’tÌýhave time toÌýhonourÌýand enjoy the win until the news was announced months later at TheÌýWhatsonstageÌýawards! Such a cool and unique experience!Ìý

It’s very surreal and lovely toÌýbeÌýdoing this particular show.ÌýI remember needing to choose material for anÌýassessment at 911±¬ÁÏÍø andÌýbeingÌýtruly lostÌýuntil I stumbled across a duet fromÌýOnce on This Island.

Ìý

What excites you most about this production?Ìý

I am a bit of a history nerd so as soon as OlaÌýInce (Director)Ìýtold me we wouldÌýhonourÌýthe Haitian roots of the story I was excited.ÌýI’m lovingÌýdiggingÌýintoÌýthe culture and legacy of the country.ÌýÌý

I’mÌýreally looking forward to hearing and singing the music. My parents are fromÌýtheÌýCaribbean,Ìýso doing a show featuring calypso style music is pure joy for me.ÌýÌý

I also think people underestimate the confronting themes of the show and amÌýreally openÌýto telling a story about colonialism andÌýcolourismÌýthrough this medium.ÌýIt’s not often you are able to tell a story like this via Musical Theatre.ÌýI think the show could beÌývery special.ÌýÌý

Ìý

What challenges doesÌýperformingÌýin theÌýopen airÌýpresent?Ìý

I love working at Regent’sÌýPark.ÌýIt’sÌýhonestly amazing!ÌýI can imagine a space like thatÌýisn’tÌýfor every actor but IÌýkind of loveÌýthatÌýitÌýfeels so unpredictable.ÌýThereÌýare soÌýmanyÌýpossible distractions,ÌýIÌýkind of findÌýit hilarious and fun. A bird could land on the set, it could start raining and you justÌýcan’tÌýignore it. But why should you?ÌýIt’sÌýreally happening! I love that!ÌýÌý

Regent’sÌýPark also has their own dedicated voice specialist which is so necessary and helpful.

Oh,ÌýandÌýhayÌýfeverÌýis aÌýbuggerÌýifÌýyou’reÌýa sufferer.Ìý

This production follows your success withÌýGet up,ÌýStandÌýup!Ìýfor which you were nominated for an Olivier.ÌýWhat was your most memorable experienceÌýofÌýthe showÌýand what are you most proud of?Ìý

That show afforded me some of the most incredible experiences of my career.ÌýOf course,Ìýbeing nominated for an Olivier was insane. Even being asked about it still blows my mind.ÌýÌý

PerformingÌýwithÌýBob Marley’s family in the audience was definitely up there for me.ÌýHow surreal.ÌýÌý

I’m really proud of what we created actually.ÌýThe show was beautiful.ÌýOften the audiences would remind me of experiences I would have as a child in church. A truly special community experience.

IÌýrememberÌýonÌýJamaican Independence Day seeing a sea of Jamaican flags and welling up in the curtain call. YouÌýdon’tÌýsee that stuff in the West End. I felt so seen.ÌýÌý

Mawa Theatre CompanyÌýhas just staged a sell-out Shakespeare Monologue Slam at The Globe Theatre, how was that?Ìý

Mawa Theatre Company makes me smile from ear to ear just talking about it. If someone told me atÌý911±¬ÁÏÍø,ÌýI’dÌýbe a producer IÌýcouldn’tÌýhave imagined it for a secondÌý-Ìýbut affording Black women the opportunity to perform at The Globe in front of an industry panel and their peers is one of the most beautiful experiences of my career.ÌýÌý

Once on This IslandÌýopens at Regent’s ParkÌýOpen Air Theatre onÌý10 May and you can find out more about Mawa TheatreÌý.Ìý
